As schools around the island closed for the two-week Easter holiday, Seales School of Music and Performing Arts held a ten-day Easter music camp between the April 11 and 21, which saw the participation of 24 children. The camp was led by music specialist Mrs Danielle Sirek. Mrs Sirek is a musician and teacher who hails from multicultural Toronto, Canada. As a music educator, she is committed to student-focused lessons, creativity, and holistic learning through performance, composition, and improvisation in a variety of styles and genres. Danielle has taught early-year’s music (ages one to three), choir, orchestra, musical theatre, and ‘world’ percussion at schools in Canada and in the United Kingdom, and has performed extensively as a classically trained soprano in opera, oratorio, choral music, folk music, musical theatre, improvisation, and contemporary music. Danielle’s passion for music has inspired her to pursue her PhD, which she is now completing in music and identity construction in Grenada. The young campers (between the ages of four and 14) were led under the theme of Rhythms from Around the World, which highlighted our multicultural world and focused on the diversity of global music. They learnt apartheid-influenced South African freedom songs, simple cords of jazz and blues, African music, native and Inuit music, as well as Latin American, hip hop, and East-Asian music.
In the next issue:
- Voice-training workshop on its way
- Miss St George’s Queen Show
- Jazz it Grenada: a tribute to Michael Pitt.
